EFNL FAQs - Beaconsfield JFC

Last season the club explored the opportunity to join the same league as our Senior Club, the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL). Along with Berwick and Narre North, we were unsuccessful, however the Executive Committee has unanimously voted to revisit the opportunity for the 2024 season.

As has been communicated our priority is to make sure all of our families are properly informed.

We have put together the following Question and answers based on the queries we have received, the recent survey responses and all of the information which families need to know.

The Executive Committee feel that there are many positives with the EFNL, not just in the short term, but in the long term future of our club, including stability, consistency and stronger competition.

What is the EFNL, and why is the club looking to move?

The Eastern Football Netball League is the one of the largest and strongest community Football competitions in the country. The league consists of 48 clubs across both Senior and Junior competitions.

Strong financial position, healthy balance sheet.
EFL brand and reputation as a leading Competition.
Competitive, graded football and netball across all Divisions.
Consistent application of By Laws and Competition rules.
Strong club base and quality volunteers.

Over the last few years BJFC has explored opportunities outside of the SEJFL that provides our families with a better football experience. Our families have told us that they wanted:

consistent times so they can watch all of their children
stronger competition
better and fairer application of by-laws/competition rules
more organised fixturing

The EFNL league presents a great opportunity for our club to become part of the strongest Football league in the country. A multi divisional structure across all age groups that leads into a 5 division Senior competition that our Senior Club joined in 2022. We strongly value the alignment with our Senior club as this provides many benefits in the later years as players transition. Whilst not a key reason, the EFNL also provides a substantial cost savings to the club for fees.

Are any other clubs looking to move also?

We are aware of atleast 2 other clubs from the SEJ that are exploring the opportunity to join the EFNL in 2024.

I’ve heard the SEJ is looking to play games against clubs as far away as Rosebud and Sorrento in 2024, is this true?

AFL South East have confirmed they are in positive discussions with the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL) that would see them participate in the regional competition along with the FDJFL and SEJFL. The regional competition is played in age groups u13s and above in 2023. MPJFL Clubs can be seen here

TRAVEL

One of the greatest topic of questions has related to travel, we have put together tables showing distances and times for each club (based on travel from Holm Park).

2023 saw SEJ clubs u13 and above join a regional competition, which joined the SEJ and the Frankston District Junior Football League Clubs. As mentioned above this is likely to also include clubs from MPJFL, which would further extend the travel times.

My Child plays u11s to u17.5s, how far do we need to travel for games?

This will depend on the teams in your division. We have included the current layouts for each division below to give you an idea of the makeups. You can then also see the table with the travel times for each club.

My child plays in Under 8s, 9s or 10s, how far do we need to travel for games?

The EFNL organises these age groups into regions so that there is less travel for families. The under 8s competition is played at a central venue each week, if Beaconsfield were to join the under 8 competition this would be held at Rowville. For the u9&10 age groups Beaconsfield would be placed in a competition with the following EFNL Clubs:

Berwick*, Endeavor Hills, Rowville Hawks, Rowville Knights, Lysterfield Wolves, Noble Park, Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully (refer to the u9 & 10 travel distance table here)

EFNL RULES

Do they play modified rules in under 8s, 9s and 10s?

Yes, all of the younger age groups still play under modified rules, see below by age group:

The EFNL provides all umpires in every age group Under 8s through to Under 18 Girls, Under 17.5 Boys

Under 8s A team consists of 18 players. This team is then split in to two and forms two 9 a side games. Eg/ Fixture – Beaconsfield vs Rowville Under 8s – you would turn up and play two 9 a side games side by side on a modified ground size. (If you had 36 players or close enough you would essentially have two teams.)

How does team Grading process work

The league will send out nominations for clubs to put forward what division/grade they believe their team should compete in for the 2024 season in early February, once clubs have an good knowledge of how their team is shaping up for the season. The League will then analyse past season results (for existing teams) and determine what division/grade the EFNL deems appropriate for each team. Clubs will then be notified of what divisions/grades they are in and then have 5 days to respond to the EFNL if they believe a team has been placed in an incorrect division/grade. Once all teams and grades are finalised the league will create a fixture for the first 4 rounds which will serve as grading games. Once the 4 rounds are completed, grading will be done by the league and any changes will be made. The EFNL will look at wins and losses (including margins) as well as which teams clubs have played when determining changes to grades. The fixture from Rounds 5-14 is then released. Clubs with 2 teams in an age group generally start in A grade and D grade. Clubs determine who plays in each team. Once a child has played 5 games in the A grade side they can not play in the D grade team again. D Grade players can help the A grade team though all season.

What are the game times for each age group?

The EFNL has set times for each age group, the below table outlines the intended set times for each age group. There will be circumstances where the age groups fall outside of their set time, but it will only ever be in the timeslot immediately before or after the set timeslot.

The EFNL allows a 3 year grace period for us to transition to EFNL branded uniforms.

How does EFNL Interleague work?

EFNL field the following squads in the Victorian Metro Development Series.

2 x u14 Boys
2 x u15 Girls
2 x u15 Boys

All the 7 Victorian Metro Leagues only do the same age groups (14 and 15) as they are feeders to Coates League. Coates League begins in Under 16s with the futures program. From there the U18 and Under 19 Girls teams are selected. If you are playing league rep football at 16, 17 etc its not rep football because the best players are already at Coates League level Selection Each club will get a limited number of positions where they can nominate players to try out for the 2024 Interleague teams. Beaconsfield (and any other new clubs) being new to league would be afforded extra spots than existing EFNL clubs, as the EFNL would like the opportunity to assess the new players. Once selected nominated by the club to trial players will complete AFL Combine style testing, play trials games and train during the selection process. The EFNL has partnered with Project Gap who provide high performance support throughout the program. The EFNL also has a partnership with the Hawthorn FC for our representative program which allows unique opportunities for players involved. The series is played over 3 games:
